A common piece of developmental feedback for employees and managers alike is the need to move from tactical to strategic thinking. But what does that look like?
Rich Horwath, founder and CEO of the Strategic Thinking Institute where he coaches leadership teams, writes in a feature for Harvard Business Review that CEOs and talent management leaders have asked him for a specific behavioral roadmap to help employees transition from tactical to strategic.
Horwath surveyed 2,586 managers from North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia to identify three core behavior areas that people who want to develop their strategic thinking can work on. These behaviors are thought patterns and practices that can move an employee from simply tackling problems as they come to developing deeper knowledge and insight, which leads to innovation. Employees can start by asking themselves if they are proactively moving resources from underperforming areas toward ones with greater potential.
