Gov. Bobby Jindal’s push to do away with the state’s five college management boards and create one higher education board to oversee campuses has crossed its first hurdle. The House Education Committee backed the bill in a 10-4 vote today. But first, lawmakers stripped out language that would make it easier to merge college campuses, added a requirement that would mandate diversity on the new board, and included a provision to lessen the legislative vote needed to pass tuition increases. Those changes could make passage more difficult. Jindal administration officials say a single board would eliminate bureaucracy, send more money to classrooms and better serve students. Higher education leaders say the changes wouldn’t improve school performance and could distract from other attempts to make those improvements.
