It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and part of awareness is knowing your risk. Does drinking alcohol increase your risk? Alcohol can change the way a woman’s body processes estrogen, causing blood estrogen levels to rise and increasing the risk of breast cancer. Enjoying an alcoholic beverage every once in a while is okay, but indulging in more than 2-3 drinks per week can put you at higher risk. Women who have two alcoholic drinks per day have a 20% higher risk of breast cancer than women who don’t drink at all. That risk increases 10% for each additional drink. If you want to lower your risk, limit the amount of alcohol your drink.
