Slightly more than half of all LSU graduates move to one of the nation’s 70 largest metros areas after graduation, with New Orleans and Houston being the most popular destinations.

That’s according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, which worked with labor-market research firm EMSI to compile data for 445 prominent universities and colleges, as well as NCAA Division I schools, to detail where their alumni move after college.

Among the 50.4% of LSU graduates who move to the country’s largest metro areas, 13.6% relocate to New Orleans and 7.7% go to Houston. The other most popular cities for LSU graduates to move to include Dallas, Austin, Atlanta, Los Angelos, Washington D.C. and New York City.

Patterns on where alumni from the schools included in the report move to following graduation vary widely by city and by institution. But generally, most graduates look to the biggest cities for the best career opportunities.

Only 62 institutions in the database see more than half of their alumni move to smaller metropolitan and rural areas. The SEC is the conference that sends the largest share of its students to smaller cities and rural areas. Among SEC schools, only Vanderbilt sends more than 75% of its alumni to big city metro areas.
