In another hit to Louisiana’s struggling oil and gas industry, Houma-based Gulf Island LLC and CARBO Ceramics of New Iberia say they expect to lay off nearly nearly 288 workers combined, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications filed with the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

Louisiana has lost about 12,000 oil and gas jobs since 2014.

Gulf Island has notified the LWC that it expects to lay off as many as 227 workers between June 10-23 if the company is unable to win bids on upcoming projects, according to an April 11 letter to the LWC’s Dislocated Worker Unit.

Gulf Island fabricates structures and provides other services for the offshore oil industry. “Management and our marketing department are working endlessly in an effort to pursue any and all potential jobs for Gulf Island Fabrication, Inc. and its subsidiaries in order to aide our companies and overcome these challenges,” the letter reads. “It is hoped that these layoffs are only temporary and that employees can be recalled when and if jobs are awarded.”

CARBO Ceramics filed a WARN to notify employees and the Workforce Commission that it will temporarily close because of market conditions and business needs. CARBO, which provides products and services for the fracturing industry, will lay off roughly 61 employees by June 17.
