A grand jury began hearing the case against suspended LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson and linebacker Josh Johns today. District Attorney Hillar Moore III says the grand jury will need to meet at least twice and speculates a decision could come as early as next week, according to The Times-Picayune. Jefferson and Johns were suspended indefinitely after being arrested on second-degree battery charges Aug. 26 for their alleged involvement in a fight outside Shady’s bar a week earlier. The attorney for the four alleged victims in the fight told reporters he anticipates civil suits will be filed regardless of the outcome of the grand jury investigation. For his part, LSU coach Les Miles says he would welcome Jefferson back to the team. “Our football team certainly misses a teammate and the opportunity for him to return to the team is something all of us would look forward to,” The Times-Picayune quoted Miles as saying in this week’s SEC Coaches teleconference. “The amount of the lift is stuff to speculate. I can only tell you, you’d like to have everybody, your team, back intact.” On Jarrett Lee, who has stepped in and led the Tigers to a 3-0 start in Jefferson’s absence, Miles said, “I enjoy how Jarrett has continued to compete. The success of our team is due to how strong our quarterback stepped right in and played. I don’t know that it’s a miss in execution; it’s knowing this guy (Jefferson) has been a tremendous contributor for us and at some point in time might return to the team. It certainly would be looked on very favorably.” Read more about Miles comments here.
