The Taylor Clark Gallery building on Government Street has been sold to Baton Rouge investors who plan to renovate the building into two retail units.

Robert and Kellie Belk bought the building from George Taylor Clark III, George Taylor Clark Jr. and Jane Powers Clark for $660,000 in a deal that closed Friday.

The Belks are renovating the building into two retail spaces, says Mark Segalla, of Elifin Realty, who represented the buyers with Will Chadwick. One tenant is expected to open a specialty items store this fall. Segalla says the tenant name will be released closer to opening. The second tenant has yet to be confirmed.

The 6,000-square-foot building was designed in the 1960s by renowned Baton Rouge architect A. Hays Town and has housed the art gallery for more than 55 years. Mathew Laborde, of Elifin Realty, represented the sellers.

The spot was rezoned for restaurant and bar use earlier this year after a regional restaurateur expressed interest in opening an eatery at the location, though that deal eventually fell through.
