Gen Z is increasingly exploring entrepreneurship and small business ownership as younger Americans grow dissatisfied with traditional career paths and face a difficult job market and the threat of artificial intelligence replacing entry-level positions, Inc. reports.

Research from web hosting company GoDaddy finds that more than 30 college towns experienced annual growth of more than 10% in microbusinesses, defined as companies with fewer than 10 employees. Eighty percent of the most entrepreneurial college towns were outside traditional startup hubs. The findings suggest entrepreneurship is growing beyond established technology centers and into smaller and more rural communities.

Other research points to increasing interest among younger founders. Bank of America found that the ratio of Gen X business founders to Gen Z founders narrowed from 26-to-1 in 2020 to 4-to-1 in 2026. Meanwhile, a VistaPrint survey finds 94% of Gen Z small business owners are very or somewhat happy, with more than half saying they are much happier than in previous years.

Colleges are also supporting the trend by providing resources and consulting services to student entrepreneurs and businesses in surrounding communities. Younger Americans are also less optimistic about traditional career opportunities: 51% of Gen Z respondents say they are satisfied with opportunities available to people willing to work hard, compared with 63% of baby boomers.
