Truckloads of renewable hydrocarbon diesel are once again leaving a Geismar biorefinery that was idled in the fall of 2012 by its previous owners. Ames, Iowa-based Renewable Energy Group Inc. announced this morning that the company sold its first commercial truckloads of the biofuel late last week.
REG completed an acquisition of the plant in June. The biofuel, called REG-9000/RHD, is now available for commercial sale, REG says.
“REG-9000/RHD is a new addition to our fuel product lineup designed to serve our customers’ needs for great fuel that also delivers towards our nation’s energy diversity, environmental and food security goals,” says REG President and CEO Daniel J. Oh in a prepared statement.
The plant, formerly called Dynamic Fuels, had been jointly owned by Oklahoma-based Syntroleum Corp. and Arkansas-based Tyson Foods. REG acquired it in separate deals with both firms announced over the past 10 months. The plant, which is now called REG Geismar, has the capacity to make upwards of 75 million gallons of renewable diesel each year from animal and waste fat. The Geismar plant is one of 10 biorefineries owned by REG across the country. —Steve Sanoski
