Nine schools in Louisiana—four of which are located in Baton Rouge—are among 285 public and 50 private schools across the country included in the 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, the U.S. Department of Education announced today.

Baton Rouge Magnet High School and the LSU Laboratory School, which recently celebrated its 100th birthday, are the public Baton Rouge schools bestowed with the coveted honor for high-achievement among their peers. The local private schools on the list are St. Aloysius Catholic School and St. James Episcopal Day School.

In all, six public schools and three private schools in Louisiana earned the honor. Other Louisiana public schools making this year’s list are: Benjamin Franklin High School in Orleans Parish; Martin Petitjean Elementary School and South Crowley Elementary School, both in Acadia Parish; and Pointe-Aux-Chenes Elementary School in Terrebonne Parish. The other private school on the list is St. Paul’s School in Covington.

“We want to congratulate these schools and districts for earning this distinguished honor, proving again our students are as smart and capable as any in America,” says state Education Superintendent John White in a prepared statement. “The outstanding efforts of the students, faculty and administration at these schools demonstrate the high level of academic achievement that can be accomplished with hard work, determination and a shared desire to succeed.”
