Peter J. Fos has been selected as president of the University of New Orleans. The governing board of the University of Louisiana System today chose Fos by a 13-0 vote. Fos, a professor and program director of health policy and systems management at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, replaces Tim Ryan, who was ousted in September 2010 during a dispute with the LSU System. Earlier this week, UNO moved from the LSU System into the UL System, which operates eight other universities. “UNO, under a new system, has the opportunity to reach its full potential,” Fos says, adding his initial goals will be to improve the connection between the university leadership, the New Orleans business community and the UNO community, including faculty, students and alumni. Fos was one of two finalists for the position. The other was Michael Wartell, longtime chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, where he also serves as a professor of chemistry. UNO, with an enrollment of 11,000, is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a doctoral institution with high research activity.
