A former executive director of Louisiana’s Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association has pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Orleans says 53-year-old Mona Hebert Romero pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and identity fraud. Romero admitted that she and others conspired to rig the outcome of a 2008 election for officers of the horsemen’s group—preparing and casting fraudulent ballots using Social Security numbers of HBPA members without their knowledge. The related case involving Sean Alfortish, who was running for a second term as association president in that election, is slated for September. Romero could be sentenced to five years in prison and fined $250,000. Her sentencing is set for October.
