SpaceX’s plan to build a $100 billion spaceport on Louisiana’s coast is raising concerns among residents of Pecan Island, who fear the project could threaten their homes, livelihoods and surrounding wetlands, The Lens reports.

During a recent public meeting, roughly 150 residents questioned company representatives about plans to conduct as many as 10,000 Starship launches annually, or approximately 30 per day, at a facility spanning 40,000 acres of a 125,000-acre property. Residents raised concerns about commercial fishing access, bird migration, water supplies, hurricane protection, launch noise and potential property damage.

SpaceX representatives offered reassurances but acknowledged that several critical details remain unresolved. The company conceded that launch-related exclusion zones extending 3 to 5 miles could effectively restrict access to nearby properties and fishing waters, while its environmental regulatory director said the company still needs to determine how wildlife will respond to frequent launches.

SpaceX also could not provide complete plans for protecting Pecan Island from storm surge or confirm whether the facility would draw from the community’s aquifer. The company’s initial construction plans, outlined in a subsequent state permit application, would result in the loss of nearly 400 acres of marsh for a wharf and access road.

Residents also questioned protections against rocket-related damage, citing reports of cracked foundations and other damage near SpaceX’s Texas launch site. Louisiana legislation limits the company’s liability for disturbances including noise, vibration and temporary access restrictions, leaving residents concerned about their legal recourse.
