East Baton Rouge Parish will begin its flood-related debris removal process on Monday, Aug. 22, in the Baton Rouge area.

Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden activated the city-parish’s debris removal contract earlier this week in response to the flooding, the city-parish says.

Contractors will begin working in areas with the highest concentration of flood-related debris that are accessible to debris removal trucks.

Residents are being asked to place storm-related debris on the public right-of-way, which extends from the street to the sidewalk, ditch, utility pole or easement, as close to the curb as possible.

They are also being asked not to place debris near a water meter vault, fire hydrant or any other above-ground utility or under electrical lines.

“We will recover, we will rebound, and we will rebuild,” Holden says. “That process starts now, and our commitment to the residents of Baton Rouge is that we will work tirelessly to remove any flood-related debris as quickly as we can so our residents are able to begin rebuilding.”

City-parish officials also expect to publish an initial debris removal schedule later this week. The schedule will include Monday’s debris removal routes, a web-based map for residents to track where trucks have been working on a daily basis and which areas they will work next.

Also, residents are being asked not to dispose of filled sandbags in their garbage carts. “The filled bags are simply too heavy for the carts, and will rip out the bottoms of the carts when the automated trucks attempts to pick them up,” the city-parish says.
