Holden-based Ferrara Fire Apparatus will build 13 more fire trucks for the New York City Fire Department under a contract extension bringing the total number of aerial ladders it has built for the FDNY to 54. Last July, Ferrara landed a contract to build 21 additional fire trucks for the department on top of an initial order for 20. Many of those are now in service, says Chris Ferrara, company president and CEO. “The feedback we’ve been getting from the department as a whole, along with the crews who work on these aerials, couldn’t be better,” he says. “Of course, the only way we could actually prove our product was by putting them into service.” As with the previous contracts, the new one calls for 100-foot rear-mount aerial ladder trucks. Ferrara says the compact design of the trucks, which seat six, makes them ideal for the congested streets of New York City, and the 10-foot, 10-inch travel height allows them to fit easily into the FDNY’s historic fire stations with low door openings.
