C.H. Fenstermaker & Associates Inc. of Lafayette has won the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development’s Transportation Excellence Award for its use of underwater acoustics and high-definition survey to inspect Lake D’Arbonne Dam in Union Parish. The firm combined data collected from the two technologies to develop a comprehensive model of the dam for analysis. The project was intended to provide an in-depth profile of the condition of the structure and the water bottom approach and egress to repair any problems. Fenstermaker won the same award in 2007 for its high-definition underwater acoustic work on the Huey P. Long Bridge in New Orleans. It was the first underwater inspection of that structure and part of the widening project. Ken LaBry and Ryan Fuselier led the firm’s work on the Union Parish project.
