The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently authorized a proposed expansion of the Cameron LNG export facility in Hackberry.

The American Press reports Cameron LNG’s application to FERC was filed in late September. According to FERC’s order authorizing the expansion, Cameron LNG will be able to “site, construct, and operate certain additional facilities,” which company officials say will include two more trains and a fifth full containment storage tank. The additional trains will bring the terminal’s total to five.

The design of the latest trains will be identical to the design of the three other trains being constructed at the LNG terminal. Each will have a liquefaction capability of nearly 5 million metric tons per year. FERC officials say the proposed expansion will allow Cameron to export an additional 9.97 million metric tons of LNG per year.

The Cameron LNG terminal was originally authorized to import, store and deliver LNG to domestic markets, FERC officials said. The commission then authorized Cameron LNG to use the terminal to export LNG to foreign markets.

In 2014, FERC authorized the company to build and operate more facilities at the terminal in order to liquefy and export up to 14.95 million tons of LNG per year.

FERC’s authorization stipulated the expansion project be completed and ready for service within four years of the order.
