ExxonMobil maintains it “worked tirelessly to preserve and protect the health of our neighbors and the greater community” while preparing for and recovering from Hurricane Gustav last year, according to a company statement issued today in response to a recent OSHA investigation. The federal agency determined the company did not perform an emergency plant shutdown during the storm and exposed employees to wind hazards, which it categorized as a “serious” violation. OSHA proposed a citation and $5,000 fine. ExxonMobil maintains it reached a settlement several weeks ago in which OSHA withdrew the citation and fine. In exchange, ExxonMobil says it is currently conducting third-party reviews of emergency response plans to identify suggested recommendations for implementation.
