Daniel Bevan, a Baton Rouge native, first began working when he was 15 years old for his uncle, Huey Wilson, at Wilson’s Jewelers and Catalog Showroom as the store’s engraver.
As Business Report details in its new Executive Spotlight feature on Bevan, it was after graduating from LSU and serving in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps that Bevan went back to work for his uncle in the company’s corporate office before becoming a CPA and managing the Wilson family’s affairs. He is now president and trustee of his uncle’s charitable firm, the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation.
The 66-year-old tells Business Report that the greatest personal or professional obstacle he’s had to overcome was a heart attack he suffered at 53 years old.
“I thought I was in good health as I was not overweight, I exercised regularly and did not smoke,” he says. “It makes one realize that you can’t take anything for granted.”
To get his workday off to a good start, Bevan says he focuses on getting prepared for the day immediately upon getting into the office.
“Of course something is going to come up that ruins that preparation,” he says, “but being prepared is the best way to start the day.”
To unwind after a long workday, Bevan says he either goes to a health club or runs on a treadmill at his home. He’s also partial to golf.
“I like to play golf. I just don’t do enough of it,” he says. “I particularly like to play in golf tournaments supporting our nonprofit organizations. I get to play golf and feel good about it helping our nonprofit community.”
