The Louisiana Bucket Brigade and the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Integrity Project are calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to “take over” the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. “Four serious accidents in 63 days—in Geismar, Norco and Baton Rouge, and the state’s failure to protect nearby residents, has highlighted the state’s incompetence and renewed calls for a federal takeover,” a Bucket Brigade press release states. The groups plan to hold a press conference in Baton Rouge Thursday morning. DEQ says it will review the information presented at the press conference before considering a response. “DEQ and EPA have a strong partnership, and we look forward to continuing this relationship,” the department adds in a prepared statement.
