Dick Russell, who had a reputation as being the best dog trainer in Louisiana, died today at his home. He was 73. Russell had been battling cancer, yet despite his illness he continued to train dogs until a few weeks ago. “He truly was a dog whispering type guy,” says Richie Adams, founder of River Road Creative, who is making a documentary about Russell. “But he had the heart and soul of a cowboy. He was a Jack Palance type guy. There was no fluff.” Russell built up his dog training business through word of mouth, without advertising. “I’m working with people instead of for someone—that’s the difference,” Russell told 225 magazine. “My boss is the public, and it’s a good boss to have.
