Edwin Edwards to leave prison this month

After more than eight years in federal prison, Edwin Edwards will be released to a halfway house sometime this month, but no one’s saying precisely when that will be. Anna Edwards, daughter of the four-term former governor, released a statement today saying the Edwards’ family looks forward to his release from the Oakdale prison. She says Edwards will be assigned to a halfway house for six months, but would only say the transfer would be in January. The Federal Bureau of Prisons doesn’t release transfer dates. Anna Edwards says her father won’t be speaking to the media while in the halfway house, in keeping with Bureau of Prisons rules. Edwards went to jail in October 2002 for a bribery and extortion scheme to rig the riverboat casino licensing process. According to friends and family, Edwards is romantically attached to an Alexandria woman named Trina Scott and is contemplating marriage. “I don’t know if he can get married right away, but it’s absolutely in his future,” says brother Marion Edwards. Scott, who is described as being in her 30s, has been visiting Edwards, 83, in prison since April.
