Usually, the bizarre antics of the Metro Council are little more than an amusing distraction from the day-to-day drudgery of life, says Business Report Executive Editor JR Ball. “Yet there was nothing comical about the pathetic display of council ineptitude at Wednesday’s meeting. The agenda for this regularly scheduled meeting of the Metro Council was to be filled with an inordinate number of important items—principally because this council believes 1] in multiple deferrals, 2] that it has the right to revisit its own votes multiple times and 3] that its will trumps the will of the people. It was to be a meeting so important to the public that enough people were passionate enough about their individual cause (primarily the latest downtown library debate) to abandon their regular lives long enough to fill the council chambers, turning it into a standing-room-only situation,” Ball says. “The key phrase here is ‘was to be,’ because, shockingly, the meeting ended almost as soon as it began. It ended because one too many council members decided it was more important to do their business in the halls and bathrooms on the third floor of the Governmental Building rather than the people’s business in the council chamber.” Read the full column here.
