Average weekly wages in East Baton Rouge Parish increased by 7.8% in the second quarter of 2008, putting the parish fifth on a national ranking of county-level wage growth. The average weekly wage in the parish was $790, according to the report from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s $57 a week more than a year before. At the same time, employment went up by 1.8% in the parish, compared with a 0.3% increase nationwide. Political and business leaders say the figures are impressive in light of the national recession. “These data reinforce what we’ve already seen in other regional economic statistics, such as strong job creation and low unemployment, all of which point to a growing economy in 2009,” says Adam Knapp, Baton Rouge Area Chamber president and CEO.
