The amount of sales taxes collected in East Baton Rouge Parish increased by 5.4% in May when compared with a year ago. More than $12.3 million was collected in May, compared with $11.7 million in May 2010, according to figures released today by the city-parish Finance Department. Those figures do not include vehicle sales taxes. The reason for the increase was a 15% jump in sales outside the city limits. That broke a two-month losing streak for the area, which includes the Mall of Louisiana and Perkins Rowe. Collections from the unincorporated areas were nearly $5.8 million in May, compared with $5 million in May 2010. Inside the city limits, $6.5 million was collected, 2% less than the nearly $6.7 million collected in May 2010. Through the first five months of the year, nearly $60.8 million in sales taxes have been collected parishwide, compared with nearly $59.3 million through May 2010. That’s an increase of nearly 2.6%.
