East Baton Rouge Parish sales tax collections increased 5.5% in 2008, despite the national recession. According to figures from the city-parish Department of Finance, $159 million in sales taxes were collected during the year, compared with $150.8 million in 2007. The figures do not include vehicle sales taxes, which were down 12% for the year, to $12.3 million. A strong December helped to boost the final numbers. Collections in December were nearly 11% more than they were in December 2007, reaching $16.8 million. That was the second largest month-to-month increase of the year, behind only October, which was aided by Hurricane Gustav repairs. Tax collections outside of the Baton Rouge city limits were up 21%, to nearly $8 million.
