East Baton Rouge Parish sales tax collections were up 4.26% in December from the year before, the first time since March 2009 that this revenue posted a year-to-year increase. Nearly $14.8 million in sales tax was collected in December, up from the nearly $14.2 million collected in December 2009, say officials with the city-parish Finance Department. Those figures do not include vehicle sales tax collections. Collections inside the city limits showed the biggest increase, nearly 5%, from $7.5 million to roughly $7.9 million. Collections from sales inside the unincorporated areas were up 3.4%, from nearly $6.7 million to over $6.9 million. The end-of-the-year uptick was welcome but not enough to offset the decline for 2010. For the entire year, $145.8 million in sales tax was collected, a 3.15% drop from the nearly $150.6 million collected in 2009.
