East Baton Rouge Parish added an estimated 763 residents between July 2013 and July of last year, a 0.2% increase, according to updated figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau this morning. A total of 446,042 people were living in the parish as of July 2014, the figures show.
While the parish recorded about 6,000 births between the summer of 2013 and 2014, and roughly 3,700 deaths, the natural gain in population was offset by an estimated 2,459 people who moved out of the parish to other locations within the state or U.S. However, the figures also show the parish added 1,079 residents who came here from outside of the U.S. Since July 2010, when the recorded population was 440,854, East Baton Rouge Parish has grown by about 1.2%.
Population growth between July 2013 and 2014 was much stronger in neighboring parishes. Ascension Parish saw its estimated number of residents rise 2.3% to 117,029 as of last summer, up from 114,432 the year previous. Livingston Parish, meanwhile, recorded a 1.1% increase in residents over the year, up to 135,751, from 134,238.
As Governing magazine reports, many of the nation’s fastest-growing counties are concentrated in the Sun Belt, with parts of Florida and Texas experiencing population gains ranging between 3% and 5% since 2013. Rural counties in western North Dakota also continued to add residents at a rapid pace as a result of growth in the energy sector.
