Building permits issued in East Baton Rouge Parish were up by 5.9% in October, to 1,773, compared to 1,674 issued in October 2010, the city-parish Department of Public Works reports. Year-to-date, however, permits issued this year trail 2010 figures by about 3%, or 590 permits. Valued by the department at $103.5 million, the largest commercial project to receive permitting in October was the nine-story, 330,000-square-foot heart and vascular tower under development at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center off Essen Lane. Fees collected on permits in October were approximately $735,000, up 180% compared to the $262,000 collected in October 2010. Year-to-date fee collections—$4.6 million—are up roughly 12% compared to the $4.1 collected through October in 2010.
