East Baton Rouge Parish posts minimal gain in sales tax revenue, thanks to increased collections outside city limits

Despite a more than $171,000 decrease in sales tax collections within Baton Rouge’s city limits, the city-parish posted a small gain in sales tax revenue in January thanks to increased collections in the rest of the parish.

According to the monthly report from the city-parish Department of Finance, released today, East Baton Rouge Parish collected $12,948,191 in sales taxes in January, up a mere .05%, or $5,830, from the same month in 2015, when the parish collected $12,942,361.

Sales taxes collected outside of Baton Rouge’s city limits in the parish increased by 3.22%, which was enough to offset a 2.30% decrease in taxes collected within the city limits.

Sales tax collections inside the city limits decreased by $171,313 to nearly $7.28 million in January, down from the roughly $7.4 million collected for the same month in 2015.

Meanwhile, tax collections for the rest of the parish rose by $177,143 to approximately $5.7 million in January, up from $5.5 million in January 2015.
