LAFAYETTE (AP) — Lafayette cardiologist Mehmood Patel’s attorneys have filed motions for a new trial, a judgment of acquittal and arrest of judgment.
Jurors found Patel guilty on 51 counts for performing “medically unnecessary” cardiac procedures on his patients and billing federal health care and private insurance providers for them.
Patel was originally indicted on 91 counts of health care fraud in February 2006 following a federal investigations into related allegations.
He was convicted on Dec. 31.
If granted a new trial, attorney Michael Small said on Tuesday he is unsure of whether he is going to pursue a change of venue.
