Since July, an average of 4.7 deepwater drilling permits have been issued per month, representing a 1.1-permit—or 19%—reduction from the 2010 monthly average of 5.8 permits, says a new report from Greater New Orleans Inc. It’s also a 2.3-permit, or 33%, drop from the 7-permit monthly average over the past three years. GNO, a regional economic development agency, has been tracking permitting since the federal government announced that it would lift the Deep Water Drilling Moratorium on Oct. 12, 2010. Shallow-water permit approvals are also below the historical average. In the past three months, an average of 4.7 permits were also issued. That’s a 34% decrease from the 2010 average of 7.1 permits per month, and a 68% drop from the 14.7-permit monthly average over the past three years.
