Offshore oil and gas operators in the Gulf of Mexico are reboarding platforms and rigs and restoring production following Tropical Storm Debby, says the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. The BSEE Hurricane Response Team is monitoring the operators’ activities, and reports personnel remain evacuated from 10 production platforms, or about 1.6% of the 596 manned platforms in the Gulf, as of this afternoon. Production platforms are the structures from which oil and natural gas are produced. Unlike drilling rigs, which typically move from location to location, production facilities remain in the same location throughout a project’s duration. Of the 70 rigs currently operating in the Gulf, none are still evacuated. From operator reports, it is estimated that approximately 3.21% of the current daily oil production in the Gulf has been shut-in, as is 3.64% of the current daily natural gas production. The production percentages are calculated using estimates submitted by offshore operators in daily reports to BSEE, which says it will compare the provided estimates to historical production reports to ensure the former are as accurate as possible.
