Small businesses accounted for 54.6% of private sector jobs in Louisiana, according to a new report released today by the U.S. Small Business Administration. There were 391,535 small businesses—companies that have less than 500 employees—in the state during 2008, making up 97.4% of all of Louisiana’s private sector employers. Small businesses in Louisiana are also becoming more diverse. Since 2002, black-owned businesses increased in number by nearly 49% and now make up 16% of the small firms in the state. Hispanic-owned companies increased by 45% to nearly 3% of the Louisiana total, while Asian-owned businesses were up by 26.7% to make up 2.8% of all businesses in the state. Women-owned businesses grew by 18%, so 27% of all companies in Louisiana are now owned by a woman. See the full report here.
