Music festivals are big business

It’s hard to say where Bayou Country Superfest would rank among the biggest festivals in the country since Festival Productions does not disclose revenues, though industry experts say the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival—another Festival Productions event—would definitely make the top five list. Of the festival producers that do report revenues, here’s a look at the biggest moneymakers.

5) Outside Lands, San Francisco, California     $19 million

Hosting a Superfest: What LSU gets

Hosting Bayou Country Superfest is well worth the effort for LSU. The university is reimbursed for the expenses of renting out the stadium, which cost around $700,000 last year. Additionally, it receives a cut of ticket sales, a share in concession sales and 50% of parking revenues. Here’s a look at what that meant for the university over the past three years.*

Year       Rent          Ticket rebate   Food sales Total

2012          $635,000   $330,672                $257,900     $1.2 million

2013          $635,000   $174,500                 $162,500     $972,000

2014          $800,000   $610,465                $480,000     $1.89 MM

*Not included in these figures is the amount the Tiger Athletic Foundation receives for renting out the suites in the stadium. TAF’s arrangement with Festival Productions is separate from the university’s. TAF did not respond to requests for this information.
