Baker Sales President Bob Baker of Slidell is the Louisiana Small Business Owner of the Year. The U.S. Small Business Administration presented the pipe and fence distributor executive his award Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C., as part of its National Small Business Week celebration. Baker came to Louisiana to work for the Apollo Space Project and earned a master’s of business administration degree from Loyola University. After finishing the project and his graduate work, Baker remained in Louisiana to work at a local steel pipe distributor. When that company experienced difficult times, Baker started Baker Sales in 1978. Through consultation sessions with SCORE and Small Business Development Center personnel, Baker got a $550,000 small business loan in 2000 and another $400,000 loan in 2002 to cover working capital and operation costs.
