A compounding pharmacy, where pharmacists make prescription drugs from scratch for specific patient prescriptions, will open next month on Jefferson Highway.
Business Manager Reeves Durham says she and pharmacy owner Tara Rheubottom saw an opportunity to open Integrative Pharmacy and Wellness because of the growing popularity of compounding medicine among doctors prescribing treatments for patients as well as the lack of local options for the niche business.
It will be located in a retail and office development that’s being completed on Jefferson Highway near Interstate 12, across from Gastroenterology Associates.
The pharmacy will be non-sterile, which means pharmacists will make medicine that is not injected into the body, oral and topical prescriptions. They will also sell vitamins and other products to the public.
They were drawn to Jefferson Highway for their new business because of its proximity to area hospitals, says Durham. She and Rheubottom have worked in medicine the Baton Rouge area for 20 years, mostly along Jefferson Highway.
“We think there’s plenty of room to grow (in Baton Rouge) and (compound medicine) is becoming more and more popular,” Durham says.
They’re shooting for a mid-August opening, and also plan to open a hair restoration center in the building in the next six months.
