Companion Animal Alliance of Baton Rouge today launched a public campaign to raise an additional $2 million to fund construction of a new animal shelter.
“Generous people and foundations already have pledged $10 million for the new shelter in our quiet phase of fundraising,” says Henson Moore, co-chair of the capital campaign, in a statement. “We expect to raise $2 million more from the community and begin construction before the end of the year.”
The nonprofit took responsibility for the city-parish’s animal shelter, currently located near the airport, five years ago, according to a news release. To help its fundraising efforts, CAA has launched a website for the shelter campaign. Supporters can make one-time donation on the site or start their own fundraisers.
The current shelter is nearly 40 years old and is costly to operate. It also lacks an area to quarantine sick animals.
“Our pets deserve a better animal shelter,” says Charlie Lamar, co-chair of the fundraising campaign, in a statement. “They rely on us for their well-being, and we must give them a more humane place to live while they wait to be adopted.”
The new shelter will be located near the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
