Chances are, many Baton Rougeans have spotted former Gov. Buddy Roemer sitting alone reading or writing—but always quietly and off to himself—in a bookstore, coffee shop or restaurant. He’s a regular at the Barnes & Noble off Corporate Boulevard, less of a customer than a resident. “It’s an old college habit,” Roemer says. “In the ’60s, Harvard was surrounded by coffee shops—a New England tradition—and I was young and didn’t have many friends there, so I’d go to a coffee shop in order to be in contact with people, but also get my work done.
