CLINTON [AP] — An East Feliciana Parish grand jury has indicted Police Juror Edward Brooks Sr. on a charge of abuse of office.

The indictment, returned on Tuesday, stems from a Feb. 12 incident in which police jury workers and equipment were sent to Brooks’ home between Clinton and Jackson because Brooks’ sewer was stopped up.

District Attorney Sam D’Aquilla said the streets in Brooks’ subdivision were accepted into the parish road system, but the police jury does not maintain the sewer system.

The abuse of office statute prohibits a public official from using the office to “compel or coerce” any person to provide the official with anything of value to which the official is not entitled.

The 62-year-old Brooks said he didn’t feel that he did anything wrong.
