Republican Dan Claitor, who unsuccessfully ran for district attorney last year, became the first candidate to qualify for a south Baton Rouge Senate seat today. As of press time, Claitor was the only candidate to sign up to run for the 16th District seat formerly held by U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy. Qualifying ends Friday. Two other Republicans, Laurinda Calongne and Lee Domingue have said they plan to run. The primary will be March 7, with a runoff on April 4 if necessary.
