Following the tragic death of a woman who was run over by a double-decker float at the Krewe of Nyx parade in New Orleans last night, a city-parish spokesman says law enforcement will deploy barricades on Saturday like it’s done in years past, but not any extra.

The Krewe of Spanish Town, set to roll Saturday, is Baton Rouge’s last parade for the Carnival season. City-parish spokesman Mark Armstrong says barricades will be deployed for the parade in “law enforcement designated areas,” as has been done in years past, specifically at curves and intersections, where law enforcement officers will also be present.

Barricades will also be deployed at areas designated by parade organizers.

“Public safety is the priority at our parades,” Armstrong says.

The accident that killed a woman at the Krewe of Nyx parade last night occurred near the intersection of Magazine and Valence streets. According to media reports, she tripped while trying to cross between a tandem float.

Along with the barricades, Armstrong notes Baton Rouge law enforcement will also block access to cross streets a block away from the parade route so vehicles can’t drive up close to the crowd. Vehicle traffic on the route will not be allowed to resume until the crowd has thinned following the parade’s conclusion.
