Chevron Corp. could lay off 385 employees at five office locations in Covington and Lafayette, the Louisiana Workforce Commission says in a news release.

Chevron has submitted a worker adjustment and retraining notification, or WARN, notice to LWC. Companies are required to file the notice if there is a mass layoff or a full plant closure resulting in 50 or more employees losing their jobs in any 30-day period.

Plummeting oil prices led to a $588 million lost in the fourth quarter for Chevron, which says the potential layoffs would 45 off-shore workers and 340 employees at three facilities in Covington and two others in Lafayette.

“In light of the current market environment, Chevron is focusing its efforts on increasing efficiencies, reducing costs and prioritizing projects in the Gulf of Mexico,” Chevron says in its WARN notice.

Chevron also tells LWC that it will help affected employees find jobs at other Chevron locations and offer severances to employees who cannot find one.

“LWC Rapid Response personnel are in the process of coordinating the delivery of re-employment services with the company, including information on unemployment insurance benefits, résumé and interview skills training and job-searching tools,” the commission says.
