It cost less in Louisiana to provide a bountiful Thanksgiving meal this year, the Louisiana Farm Bureau says.

The average total cost for a Thanksgiving dinner in Louisiana is $49.79, which is slightly cheaper than the national average of $49.87, WWL radio reports.

“For $50 to $60 you can put quite a feast together, which would consist of turkey and all of the different sides that we are used to having, especially in Louisiana,” says Denise Canatella, chair of the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.

The low prices, Canatella says, are a testament to farmers’ hard work following the floods and drought they’ve dealt with this year.

She adds Louisiana shoppers can expect to pay less for Thanksgiving favorites like sweet potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie mix, and pie shells.

Shoppers will pay a little more for turkey, milk, rolls, whip cream, and a veggie tray, she says. She encourages people to look around to find the best deals.

“We haven’t seen prices like this in years,” Canatella says.

Of the 12 items surveyed nationally, 5 were cheaper than a year ago and 7 were more expensive.  The price drop in those five items were significant enough to drop the overall total year over year.
