LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis was today awarded the annual Broyles Award, given to the top college assistant coach. Meanwhile, 10 LSU football players have made the first or second All-SEC teams, as voted upon by the SEC coaches. Chavis, 55, is in his third year with the top-ranked Tigers, who will play Alabama for the national championship next month. Chavis is the 16th winner of the award named in honor of former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles, whose assistant coaches went on to become notable head coaches at the college or professional level. Chavis guided an LSU defense that was second in the country in both scoring and total defense. The Tigers allowed an average of just 10.5 points and 252.1 yards per game.
