Capitol City Produce, located on Commercial Avenue, is expecting to break ground later this summer on a 50,000-square-foot expansion that will more than double the company’s facility size in order to grow its offerings.

The Baton Rouge-based dairy and produce supplier will enlarge its offices and warehouse from about 30,000 square feet to more than 80,000 in order to carry a larger variety of produce and better serve customers, says Amanda Sanders, Capitol City Produce’s executive director of marketing. The expansion’s total cost has yet to be determined.

“We are hoping to break ground in August if it will ever stop raining,” Sanders jokes.

Capitol City Produce, founded in 1947, provides dairy, frozen foods, and local or specialty fruits and vegetables to LSU, the Baton Rouge Marriott, and other locations and grocery stores across south Louisiana and parts of Mississippi.

Sanders says the expansion comes after a period of growth for Capitol City Produce, and the company hopes the project will provide a better work space for its more than 175 employees.

“We’re still exploring what additional things we might carry,” Sanders says. “We are also still negotiating with contractors for the construction of the expansion.”

The company currently has a fleet of 52 trucks specialized for food transport, but Sanders says the expansion will not include additional trucks.
