Capital Region ranks low for property taxes

A new study that measures property taxes in counties and parishes across the U.S. shows that Capital Region homeowners pay some of the lowest in the nation. East Baton Rouge Parish residents paid a median average of $632 in property taxes in 2009, according to the Tax Foundation. That average ranks 728th out of 792 counties. Livingston Parish residents paid even less, $313, which put the parish 773rd on the list. Ascension Parish residents paid a median average of $283 in real estate taxes, which was 777th.
