Tuesday — The League of Women Voters of Baton Rouge will hold a luncheon discussion on the tentative sale of the state Office of Group Benefits at 11:30 a.m. at Drusilla Place Catering. Participants include Tommy Teague, former group benefits CEO; state Sen. Butch Gautreaux, D-Morgan City, chairman of the retirement committee; and Frank Jobert, executive director of the Retired State Employees of Louisiana Association. Wednesday-Friday — The Center for Planning Excellence will hold its annual Smart Growth Summit in the Shaw Center. Tom Murphy, the former mayor of Pittsburgh and a senior resident fellow with the Urban Land Institute, will be the keynote speaker. Friday — Kean Miller will sponsor a breakfast seminar on insurance for contractors working in the construction industry, from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Juban’s. The seminar will cover general liability, builders risk, and errors and omissions insurance as well as provide real-life scenarios. To register, e-mail rsvp@keanmiller.com.

Aug. 23 — The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University, along with the Louisiana Economic Development Council, will hold a six-week class on entrepreneurship at the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center. “Write Your Own Check: Be an Entrepreneur” will meet Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m., through Sept. 27. The program is intended to prepare participants for the business planning process and address the most common issues faced by startups. Registration for all six classes is $120, but scholarships are available to students. To register, go to selu.edu.
