‘Business Report’ planner: Thomas set to be honored at Mid City luncheon … Historical foundation to observe Battle of Baton Rouge … CPEX planning smart growth summit

Thursday — The Mid City Redevelopment Alliance will honor Elizabeth “Boo” Thomas at its annual Legacy Luncheon, which will be held at noon at Boudreaux’s. Thomas, the first executive director of the redevelopment alliance, will be presented with the Rev. Mary E. Moody Medal of Lifetime Achievement. Tickets for the luncheon are $50 and can be purchased by calling 346-1000.

Saturday — The Foundation for Historical Louisiana will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. commemorating the Civil War battle fought in Baton Rouge. The event, held at Magnolia Cemetery, will mark the Battle of Baton Rouge, which was fought on Aug. 5, 1862. Chip Landry, southeast brigade chairman of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, will speak at the event and tell the story of Maj. Bolling Chinn, a Confederate soldier from Grosse Tete who fought in the battle and is buried in the cemetery.

Aug. 17-19 — The Center for Planning Excellence will hold its annual Smart Growth Summit at the Shaw Center. Tom Murphy, the former mayor of Pittsburgh and a senior resident fellow with the Urban Land Institute, will be the keynote speaker. The event is free for students and teachers.
