Two community banks with a Baton Rouge presence had different results on their first-quarter earnings. Britton & Koontz posted a jump in profits, going from $63,293, or 3 cents a share, in the first quarter of 2010, to $575,420, or 27 cents a share, in the first three months of 2011. The Natchez, Miss.-based bank says several factors led to the improved results, including a $350,000 decrease in the provision for loan losses and a $219,000 gain on the sale of investment securities. Lafayette-based Home Bank says its first-quarter earnings were down 6% from the same period last year because of modest loan demand. The company had net income of $794,684, or 11 cents a share, compared with $845,415 in the first quarter of 2010, or 11 cents a share.
